Shorten Your List

How is it that we always have so much to do?

I’m the queen of list makers. I love making lists, and delight in crossing off achieved items. Yet, there are always those pesky, super persistent tasks that stick around, and don’t seem to get done.

In 2024, I did something different. I decided that I would have three business goals: not the standard half page list, but three. And I would firmly commit to getting them accomplished. I knew there would be exciting topics that would try to lure me to get off track, such as speaking engagements, extra industry conferences and reviewing additional software.

While I was focused, I’ve also had my daily client and family items that must take precedent.

My three goals were:

  1. Implementing an additional planning tool to provide clients an enhanced and intuitive view into their retirement income planning.
  2. Rebranding the company to Carlton Wealth Management.
  3. Redesigning and updating my website to better reflect the company as we move forward.

Tools that assisted me in the process included:

  • I joined an accountability group ( 7/1) – One topic, seven weeks, seven people.

I learned of a peer group in which there was a requirement to have one item of focus, attendance once per week, with six peers that would offer encouragement, knowledge and feedback.

  • I kept my list short
  • Decided it is OK to say no to non-urgent requests

How did I do?

The new planning tool has been implemented and is receiving positive feedback.

I’m days away from launching the brand and website. While I wished I could have wrapped up months ago, I learned it took more time than expected to create what I envisioned.
